Hamlet’s Castle Private Tour, Countryside & Copenhagen Highlights

This is an opportunity to explore first the area north of Copenhagen, famous for woodlands and stunning coastal views while offering a fulfilling experience of the whole city as a historical playground of the Danish royalty with an inside visit to Frederiksborg Castles.

Apart from visiting world-famous Kronborg Castle, we will drive through a coastal "riviera", locally known as the Whiskey Belt, a name deriving from its wealth, beauty, summer resorts, galleries, restaurants, mansions, and royal hunting grounds. We will, for instance, enjoy the view of the panoramic Öresund strait, the main sea route into the Baltic Sea. Also of the island of Ven, once ruled (cruelly) by the renowned astronomer Tycho Brahe.

Having reached Helsingor we will be only 6 km away from Sweden, overlooking the city of Helsingborg. Over the centuries the two cities were frequent launch sites for conquests staged from both arch-enemy kingdoms. And over many years Helsingor was the convenient main point of control when taxing foreign ships and Baltic Sea trade. This source of revenue was so considerable it subsequently poisoned Denmark's international relations, not least with the competing Dutch and British naval powers.

In the afternoon we return to Copenhagen to enjoy the cities' many famous sites, palaces, cathedrals, and parks. Copenhagen is seen by many as the most liberal of the Scandinavian capitals. It has a vibrant atmosphere, a modern waterfront and focal points, a well-preserved medieval, 16th, 17th and 18th-century architecture of buildings that are predominantly still used as shops or living accommodations, and often bear witness to Denmarks' past as a global marine trading nation.

09:00 : 10:15 Our day trip begins with a drive out of the capital area along the beautiful waterfront towards the legendary castle of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The medieval town of Helsingor welcomes us with striking panoramic views of this once most powerful fortress of the Baltic Sea commanding trade and shipping of the region.
10:15 : 10:45 We will enjoy a short walk on the historically rich grounds. You will learn of the curious customs of the Kings from the past while getting the finest imaginable introduction to the world’s oldest monarchy.
10:45 : 11:15 Drive to the charming town of Hillerød
11:15 : 12:15 Inside visit to Frederiksborg Castle. The Renaissance-style Castle, dating to the early 17th century, has housed The Museum of National History since 1878. The endless rooms and halls filled with an unrivaled collection of the country´s most precious artifacts are as grandiose as the king, who built the castle. King Christian IV is the longest-reigning monarch of Denmark to date.
12:15 : 13:00 Continue on foot and a stroll through the town center to enjoy some free time for a lunch break, shopping or some exploring on your own.
13:00 : 14:00 After a satisfying pause, we will return by bus to Copenhagen
14:00 : 16:00 Once in Copenhagen, we will seize the opportunity to take a short photo break by the most important sights of the town often referred to as Venice of the North. We will see the canals by the utterly charming harbor area of Nyhavn. Today called “The New Harbor”, the townhouses in a multitude of colors and cobbled streets add a fantastic atmosphere to a lively waterfront with old ships at the docks.

The itinerary will also include sights such as the noble Christiansborg PalaceTown Hall Square, unique Tivoli Gardens and Kongens Nytorv Square. A must-have visit, when in Copenhagen, we will leave as a treat towards the end of the tour: H.C. Andersen’s odalisqueThe Little Mermaidbeautifully resting at her home on the water's edge is a beautiful way to end our day’s travels and return to the cruise harbor.
