In 1660 Potsdam became the residence of the Great Electors and Friedrich the Great, who developed it into one of Germany’s greatest Baroque cities. The grounds and buildings of Sanssouci Park provide the main attraction in Potsdam. The park contains a host of attractions  - meadows, enclosed round gardens and terraces, marble sculptures, pleasure gardens, the New palace, Dutch windmill, Chinese teahouse, Orangery, Charlottenhof and Marly castles and Roman baths.
On March 1933 a page of world history was written here, when representatives of the Old German Empire and the National Socialists marked the end of the Weimar Republic, and again in the summer of 1945 with the signing of the Potsdam Agreement. Under Socialist rule it was the political, economic and cultural centre of the lagest region of East Germany under the same name. In 1990 Potsdam became the capital of the new Land of Brandenburg.
